The article is devoted to preprints, their role in the modern scientific communication, and an observation of specialized preprint servers and international initiatives promoting preprinting among scientists and editors. Publishing of preprints speeds up scientific communication and provides access to information that would otherwise be lost to the scientific community. Preprinting benefits their authors by allowing them to receive feedback from colleagues as soon as possible and improves the manuscript before submitting it to a peer-reviewed journal.

В статье рассматривается вопрос о том, что такое препринт и какова его функция в современной научной коммуникации, приводится обзор специализированных серверов и международных инициатив, посвященных препринтам. Публикация препринтов ускоряет научную коммуникацию и открывает доступ к информации, которая в противном случае была бы потеряна для научного сообщества. Практика выгодна и для самих авторов, поскольку позволяет как можно раньше получить обратную связь от читателей, в том числе коллег и специалистов, улучшить рукопись до ее подачи в журнал. Препринт отличается тем, что автор не ограничивается этим вариантом обнародования результатов своих исследований и в дальнейшем намерен опубликовать данный текст в рецензируемом научном издании. Тем не менее редактор журнала может отказаться принимать рукопись, значительная часть которой уже размещена в открытом доступе. В статье указаны моменты, на которые стоит обратить внимание при публикации препринта, чтобы избежать проблем при его последующей трансформации в статью и опубликовании в журнале.
